One of the most viral events of this year 2022 is the defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. Every story has a beginning and so does this one. It happened during the filming of the film The Rum Diary in 2011 where both protagonists met. The couple subsequently got engaged in 2014 and married in a private ceremony in 2015.
In May 2016, Heard filed for divorce from Depp, citing domestic violence to obtain a restraining order against her husband. Heard later accepted a $7 million settlement from Depp in August 2016, withdrawing the restraining order. In December 2018, Heard wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post, claiming to be a victim of domestic abuse, though he never mentioned movie star Johnny Depp by name as his abuser. Depp then filed a defamation lawsuit against Heard over the op-ed, which is the focus of the current trial in which both are involved, taking place in fairfax, Virginia, court.
Depp also sued the editors of The Sun, a British tabloid, for defamation, over an article that referred to him as “a wife beater.” Depp lost the lawsuit and was denied the right to appeal in London court. Depp’s case was brought against News Group Newspapers (NGN), publisher of the Sun, and executive editor Dan Wootton for an article published on the Sun’s website on April 27, 2018. The article had the headline: “GONE POTTY How can JK Rowling be ‘genuinely happy’ casting Johnny Depp in the new Fantastic Beasts film after assault claim? “
Shortly after the ruling, Depp was asked to relinquish his role as Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts franchise for Warner Bros., and actor Mads Mikkelsen replaced him later.
