Google Maps allows you to go from point A to point B in various ways such as walking, driving or using public means of transport. Google has presented a novelty that allows you to choose the route that is the most ecological possible, which is often the most economical.

On some routes, the app displays estimates on fuel consumption. It will allow you to save fuel, therefore, the lower the consumption and the less theCO2 emissions  of your car. By default, Maps takes into account fuel economy on the routes it suggests. In most cases, the fastest route is also the one where less fuel is spent.

Introduction

Means of transport are part of climate change. It is estimated that 18% of CO2 emissions, the main cause of climate change. Reducing the carbon footprint is one of the objectives of the 2030 agenda. This importance has led Google to develop this tool that allows us to reduce these emissions while using our vehicle. In addition, this saves money and prevents the release of more polluting substances into the atmosphere.

How to enable or disable ecological routes

  1. On your mobile device, open the Maps app.
  2. Find your destination or click on it on the map.
  3. At the bottom left, tap How to get there.
  4. At the top right, tap More > Route Options.
  5. Turn the Higher fuel economy option on or off.

Turn eco-routes on or off in the Google Maps app

  1. On your mobile device, open the Maps app.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial Navigation >  Settings > Settings.
  3. Scroll down to Route Options and tap > More Fuel Economy.

This option may not yet be available to all users who use the application. Fuel economy estimates apply to gasoline or diesel, electric or hybrid vehicles.

An example of its use is this video:

How calculates fuel economy Google Maps

Maps calculates fuel consumption using information from the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory. This calculation takes into account factors that affect fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, such as the following:

  • Average vehicle fuel consumption in your region
  • Elevation level on the route
  • Stop and resume patterns in traffic
  • Types of roads (such as local roads or highways)

The map shows the most fuel-efficient route if it has the same arrival time as the fastest route. In cases where fuel economy is small or driving time increases considerably, Maps shows the relative fuel economy between routes to help you compare.
