How to copy files from one cloud to another

cloud services nube

Cloud-based systems are increasingly being used. It is a fairly correct way to store information and have it in several places at once. Well, that’s not really the case, since your files are hosted in a folder that you have access to with the proper credentials. Therefore, cloud as such does not exist. It is a server, a computer physically located in a place that, through an internet connection, you can access from compatible devices.

You no longer have an excuse to save your files and make backups of what really matters. Formerly they were stored on physical media such as CDs that allowed you to record up to 700 MB of information on them. It was a rudimentary, slow system, but at least you had a copy of your information at a given timestamp.

Pricing of major cloud services

Cloud storage prices vary depending on the provider and plan you choose.

  • Dropbox pricing is as follows:
    • 1 TB for 9.99 euros (99 euros/year)
    • 2 TB for 29.99 euros (199 euros/year)

On the other hand, Dropbox offers a “Family” rate for home users.

  • As for Google Drive, the minimum price per TB per year is 45 euros.
  • In the case of Microsoft OneDrive, the paid plans can be shared with up to six other family members and allow you to share a daily amount ten times higher than the free plans. The basic package price is 99 euros per year for 1 TB of capacity.

It may be appropriate to have your files in a single cloud or in two and change a paid plan for a free one by uploading the files to another cloud. In that case it is necessary to move the files from one to another.

Reasons why you should start using the cloud

The cloud is a technology that allows you to store and access data and applications over the Internet. Some of the reasons why you should use it instead of physical media such as CDs are:

  1. Accessibility: Cloud-based applications and data are accessible from virtually any Internet-connected device.
  2. Speed to market: Cloud development allows users to quickly bring their applications to market.
  3. Data security: Hardware failures do not cause data loss, thanks to network backups.

Classic Cloud Save Methods That Don’t Work

A few months ago, I tried to migrate from one cloud system to another. The receiver was OneDrive, owned by Microsoft. The process to make this backup was to copy a folder and paste inside another OneDrive folder. The problem came to the fact that the folder I wanted to copy was huge, several Gigabytes and in the process of pasting that information gave continuous errors since some files had names that were not valid for Windows systems. The error log was huge and although there was a system to correct the bugs you could never be sure that all the files had been copied correctly.

On the other hand, the process of copying and pasting involves the use of resources of the computer on which you are doing it because I consume internet bandwidth and memory. Your computer can become extremely slow, and the process can take hours or even days and nothing guarantees that you will get it.

Use MOVER to send files from one to another

One of the ways to move files in several systems in the cloud is to use MOVER, https://app.mover.io/, allows you to comfortably and easily do this task. In addition, the process does not depend on the memory or processor of your computer, since it is done from the MOVER servers and you only choose the source and destination and then import the files.

An example of importing from Dropbox to OneDrive is used. The steps to follow are as follows:

1 step) Open www.dropbox.com.

2 step) Open www.onedrive.com in another browser tab.

3 step) Enter MOVE. IO https://app.mover.io/ in another browser tab. Click AUTHORIZE NEW CONNECTOR and then add one of the cloud systems that are available. In all cases you have to allow you to use these services. A gateway is generated from one system to another system and you have to confirm it. These are available:

  • Box (Single User)
  • Dropbox (Single User)
  • Dropbox Business (Admin)
  • Google Drive (Single User)
  • OneDrive Consumer
  • OneDrive for Business (Single User)

4 step) Choose destination. In the same way you have to click on AUTHORIZE NEW CONNECTOR. The services available are:

  • Office 365 (OneDrive/SharePoint Admin)
  • OneDrive Consumer
  • OneDrive for Business (Single User)

5 step) Once you have chosen Origin and Destination you can start the process.

  • Office 365 (OneDrive/SharePoint Admin)
  • OneDrive Consumer
  • OneDrive for Business (Single User)

Result obtained

After performing the task entrusted at the end, we have a report of how the process was carried out and the result is that all the files have been copied from Dropbox to OneDrive.
